A lot of folks complain that there is so little difference between Conservative and Liberal that they say they cannot see the difference between the two. On the other hand, there are many who are either party die-hards or label-happy folks that identify themselves as either Conservative or Liberal, regardless of the party affiliation. In fact, some say that between a Conservative Democrat and a Liberal Republican (a.k.a. RINO) there is so little distinction that the differences are really moot.
While I dealt with the differences between Democrats and Republicans in an earlier post, please allow me to digress and broaden my thoughts along the larger differences between these supposed sides of the Great Divide. Some suggest that this political battle is simply a battle over who controls our culture, and perhaps to some extent who defines the manner of expression of our culture. While I am sure that volumes could be written on this point, I’m going to focus on the “SIMILAR-DIFFERENCES” between Conservatives and Liberals.
The reason that we can all still be Americans, and perhaps share a beer, a cup of coffee, a laugh or be fans of the same sports teams (high school through professional thank you), is because we are all Americans. We’re not United States-ians, we’re not all anything but Americans.
I think that every politicians would do well to stop and ponder in the silence of a quiet room (hard I know – find a closet), and consider the depth and breadth of this one thought: We are, all of us, American. Hyphenations, immigration, ethnicity and language aside – we are Americans! Does that name, that appellation, that label, have any patriotic depth or fervor anymore? I digress …
As Americans we ALL have the same 3 principle and core values. I realize that everyone is now mad. But, chill for a minute and consider what I am about to say. We all have the same 3 core principles, where we differ is in how we prioritize them, and consequently how we define them. While this is not original with me, I have not been able to find this precisely articulated anywhere the way I do:
Conservatives:
- Freedom – belief that freedom must be maintained at any and all costs, it’s worth every sacrifice.
- Prosperity – freedom provides the best environment for prosperity
- Peace – is the result of a prosperous and secure freedom.
Liberals:
- Peace – belief that peace must be maintained at any and all costs, it’s worth every sacrifice, including some freedoms.
- Prosperity – cannot truly exist in the absence of peace, or with times.
- Freedom – is important and is safeguarded by a prominent prosperity fueled peace.
How can we have the same core values yet express them differently? It is found in how we look at the world … Conservatives believe that evil exists in the world and it must be watched and stopped. Liberals believe in the inherent goodness of every person and are willing to trust that positive outcomes can always be negotiated.
